Taste

I read this brief entry on the 37signals blog “Signal vs. Noise”, and felt it was worth sharing, in it’s entirety. I admire almost everything 37signals does—’specially the blunt (but almost always bang-on) opinions of founder, Jason Fried. Once again, I couldn’t agree more. I’ll rip the entire article and post below…

There’s more to building a great product than just studying the market or the technology or competitors. You need to have taste too. You need to understand what “great” means in a big picture sense, not just in your chosen field. At least that’s what Steve Jobs thinks:

Great products, according to Mr. Jobs, are triumphs of “taste.” And taste, he explains, is a byproduct of study, observation and being steeped in the culture of the past and present, of “trying to expose yourself to the best things humans have done and then bring those things into what you are doing”.

Want to build a great iPhone app? Go listen to Billie Holliday. Trying to design a piece of hardware? Visit a Frank Lloyd Wright house. Aiming to write great marketing copy? Read Aldous Huxley. Need a color scheme? Go to the museum and check out some Mark Rothko paintings.

Studying masters in a wide range of fields is how you learn greatness. Their creations may not have a direct, instant benefit on whatever you’re making, but soaking them in will change the way you think and the decisions you make. Side benefit: you’ll be a lot more interesting person too.

Quadalogue

We used “Quad Camera” on the iPhone to shoot our projects a-la Lomography-style. Quad Camera is a fantastic app for the iPhone. Wish I had one.

I am kinda’ shocked that Wordpress can not get it’s own iPhone app (at version 2.1 as well) to play nice with this iPod Touch (which is a 2nd generation, with the very latest OS installed). Do I dig “blogging” from an iPod? Not really—but I certainly like having the option. I think most would agree. I just wonder how deeply this version was tested—and it’s certainly not just this app, either. As any iPhone owner knows, the App Store is littered with scathing reviews and complaints about apps that simply do not function-as-advertised. With respect to an entity like Wordpress, however—I am a little surprised.

If you develop iPhone/iPod Touch apps: please, test, and then test again. Then test again—then again at 3AM on a Sunday night when Saturn’s outer ring is in line with the eastern edge of the CN Tower.

Test, test—then test again. Test using my cat Pancakes if you have to—I bet she’ll find a bug. She always does around here…

I came across this fellows work last night after watching a TED talk he did back in 2008 (or 2007). His work is unreal—if “pushing the envelope” applies to anyone within our field, I think Jonathan Harris is the one (or one of the ones). Take some time, and explore his work. “Universe” alone should resonate with anyone involved in our industry.

Less Everything. A simple mission: to make web applications that help you spend less time, doing less, and getting more done.

Socialite

Realmac Software make OS X applications that are elegant, intelligent, and beautiful to look at. The app that I am most excited about, is a soon-to-be-released app titled “Socialite“. From what I gather, and from the screenshots they have provided, it looks like an all-in-one desktop-based social media hub: Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and multiple Google features.

As I said this morning on Twitter—desktop social media apps are where it’s at.

Not For Paper

I am happy to announce that I will now be writing and contributing to Not For Paper. I’d like to thank Robert for the opportunity to share my thoughts and views on the current state of interaction design, new media, technology, and the web in general. Robert (who currently holds a position with Odopod, and runs NFP) seems like a great guy, and we seem to share a similar vision with respect to our industry. I look forward to providing regular content and commentary to an already great blog.
