Fail Whale

The following is taken (mostly) from the new Fortune Magazine blog “Brainstorm Tech“, which is actually a very informative blog from a decent publication. The article is titled: “5 Twitter Tips for Your Company“. Much of what Kim Thai provides is quite relevant information, although some of it should just be common knowledge—it all depends on how long you’ve been using the service. Myself, I’ve only been using Twitter for 6 months, but in that time, I’ve met some great people, learned from other designers, shared a lot of knowledge about our industry—and witnessed 1st hand what NOT to do on Twitter…

~

1. It’s a two-way conversation.

2. Your Twitter and company voice should sound the same.

3. Tweet to attract and retain customers/clients.

4. Twitter’s just the first step.

5. Have fun and be creative.

I’ll add a few of my own—on what NOT to do…

6. This should be obvious, but learn to refrain from sending 10+ tweets a day. Unless it’s absolutely vital, just don’t. Relax.

7. Don’t just leave a shortened URL as your tweet with nothing else. It looks lazy, and/or pretentious. If URL’s didn’t get shortened it would be a different story—but they do.

8. Follow people. I’ve noticed this more than a few times (people with 100’s or 1000’s of followers, and they follow no one). This is often someone who is held in high-regard in his/her industry or field, and feels it necessary  that they follow nobody. I never, ever follow these people.

~

I enjoy Twitter. As stated, I find it a useful tool. What I don’t need, though—is it stuffed in my face every place I turn. 6 months ago, it was rare to see a “follow us on Twitter” link. Those days are gone. I guess it’s all about choice. Sometimes I choose to just tune-out…

Kanye West

“The mission of the Kanye West Foundation, is to help combat the severe dropout problem in schools across the United States by partnering with community organizations to provide under-served youth access to music production programs that will enable them to unleash their creative ability and reach their full potential.”

Great example of what looks like a simple blog theme—subtly tweaked and revised into a full-blown website. What is a “blog” now, anyway? Are they not just websites? This is also a good example of the blurring of the lines between the two…

Me Leica

img-leica

More corporate websites should conform to what the design team behind the Leica site has done. Is it the German (or European) influence? Could very well be. None-the-less, this website is yet another example of simple minimalism working extremely well…
